Black River Whitewater Kayaking Adventure

Azra and I Ticked off one of New yorks finest whitewater runs on the way to the fall break trip.

The black river drains a huge part of the Western Adirondacks and is one of the few area runs that runs reasonably consistently all year round. This river runs 150 miles and the most commonly run bit is the Class 4 bit through Watertown, just before it enters Lake Ontario.

This was both of ours first time on the river and the flow was about 2900 cfs. We started a bit later then we initially planned and were didn’t play at Hole Brothers. We were both fairly nervous about Knifes Edge, and were thankful to catch a last chance eddy and get a half-decent scout. After knifes edge it was all smiles. The glen park dam wasn’t releasing so the water in some parts of the gorge was a bit low-but it wasn’t bony. We got to see some very impressive salmon jumping at poop shoot/rocket ride. The final rapid had some huge waves!
