How to Lead a Trip

It starts with you!

1. Come up with a trip idea

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to spend the day hiking in the Catskills. Maybe you want to take some kayaks out to Cayuga for an afternoon paddle. Or maybe you want to plan rock climbing excursion! Whatever it is, we want to help you organize and lead trips that take you and others into the outdoors.

2. Identify what gear you’ll need

Once you know what you want to do or where you want to go, think of the gear that you’ll need. From crampons and snowshoes for winter hiking, life vests for boating excursions, to all the camping gear you’d ever need, COC has it all (mostly)! Just check out the appropriate gear you’ll need from our gear collection.

3. Check in with Eboard

Shoot us an email coc-exec-l@cornell.edu with your rough plan for a trip and your previous relevant experience. We just want to ensure that trips going out are safe and feasible. We’ll give you some helpful feedback and make light suggestions from our years of combined experience in the Outdoors.

4. Email the listserv

Once you know where you’re headed and what you need, open your trip up to other COC members and get a group together. Email the listserv with all the trip details and see who else is down for the ride. Coordinate transport, communication, and meetup times so that everyone is on the same page.

5. Get outdoors!

Finally, go outdoors! Once you’ve got all your plans and logistics sorted out, get outside and enjoy your well-deserved adventure. Remember to take some pictures along the way and feel free to share with us via listserve or Instagram!
