Report with a slightly dubious weather forecast for Saturday afternoon we met at Japes Friday night to start into a climbing weekend in the Dacks. After 4.5h of driving with the usual stop for milkshakes in Holland Patent we arrived at 'THE UNIT' and set up 'camp' in the cozy cabin. Despite the weather forecast, a look through the window the next morning promised at least a few hours of climbing without rain and after a quick breakfast we were on our way to the first climbing destination - KING PHILIPS SPRING WALL. An easy access to the cliff top allows fast toprope setup and after practicing belay and tie-in techniques and rope handling with our two first-time climbers Miki and Mark, everybody raced up the three lines on the wall. As the wall offers only a limited potential of climbs and the mosquitoes were very active we moved on to the DEADWATER area to climb a few more classic moderate routes. Unfortunately, although not really unexpected, we got rained off the cliff before everybody had a chance to try each of the three routes we set up. Miki could just finish 'SPACE COWBOY' and Mark got rained off the face halfway up 'BOZEMAN BULLET'. Soaked we reached the car and went into Keene Valley for a short stop at the local outdoor store followed by grocery shopping in E-town. The weather improved and, back at the cabin, we enjoyed dinner outside. Sunday brought gorgeous weather and we went to the BEERWALLS at Chapel Pond and climbed AFTERNOON DELIGHT, CWI and the SWORD at the LOWER BEERWALLS. After a refreshing watermelon lunch at the top of the cliff we finished the day at the UPPER BEERWALLS climbing SEVEN OUNCES, 3.2 and trying the harder face climb BOUNCER. On the way back to Ithaca we stopped for Chinese food in Speculator which we enjoyed at the lake. A few hours and thunderstorms later we arrived in Ithaca at 10pm.
