| Report | Having heard from club chair LeslieAckerman that ice at Salmon River? was in and in good shape (she climbed the previous day on a personal trip), nine of us made the two hour drive from Ithaca, meeting at Japes at 9 a.m. and leaving shortly afterwards. With us were first time climbers Brian and Nena-- the rest of us had some degree of ice experience. Cold conditions (highs of around 20F) prevailed -- the first two hours were partly sunny, but clouds and snow and gusting wind made the latter part of the day chilly. Ice was moderately plastic despite the temperature, and conditions were not so wet as they had been the previous (and warmer) day. Four ropes were dropped for toprope ascents -- routes included Mate, Spawn, and Die (WI5, 130'), Salmon Runs (WI4, 90'), Salmon Steak (WI4, 90'), and a WI3 route to the right of Salmon Steak. Club members JimJanney, Chris Trestick, and Tom Zajicek all got to the top of Mate, Spawn, and Die, in impressive shows of endurance and perseverence. Our beginners got to the top of WI4 routes and showed considerable improvement in footwork and tool placement over the course of the day. We climbed until near darkness, with departure at almost 6:30 after taking down our routes and stowing gear. |
