Meeting Minutes: Sept. 4th, 2007
Announcements:
Gear Night: Thursday 5:30 – 7:30pm at Japes, Rima.
NEW MEMBER BARBEQUE! Tuesday, September 11th from 5:30 – 7:30pm at Japes (before the weekly meeting). Lots of free hamburgers, hot dogs, veggieburgers, snacks, and drinks! Paddling, cycling, and slacklining will also be present! If you're not a member yet, don't worry, you can sign up at the BBQ and still get food! Just bring your small membership fee ($7/semester for undergrads, $10/semester for grads).

Andrew is inviting outing-clubbers to join him and some of his friend on their bi weekly (Monday and Wednesday nights) bouldering and climbing at the Noyes bouldering wall and climbing wall. Email him (

Trips That Were
Ben (& Peggy?) went to Kentucky to go
caving in a cave that people have been locked out of for 7 years. Ben was attacked by turkey mites.
Matt, Johanna, and Peggy went
hiking on the Finger Lakes Trail to Buttermilk Falls. About a 5.5 mile hike.
Tom led a
hike through the plantations on Sunday with 11 people.
Sourish led an 8-person
biking trip to Taughannock Falls.
Rayko and Jen led a
beginner rock climbing trip this weekend to Little Falls. From the 60 or so people that wanted to go (!!!), 16 people got a chance to climb.
30+ people at
pre-meeting paddling today!
Jim and Dan went
whitewater kayaking at the Beaver Releases and Route 3 over the weekend. Jim tore and ab, Dan dislocated a shoulder… but it was still fun.
Ari and 14 people went
kayaking and canoeing to the farmers’ market on Sunday morning.
Brad, Alex, and Rowen went
rock climbing in the Adirondacks over the weekend.
Ari led a
pre-meeting cycling trip today to Mt. Pleasant.
Brad went
mountain biking in Shindagin with several others last Wednesday.
Trips That Will Be
Gavi is leading a
mountain biking trip on Wednesday night around 5:30pm. He has a rack and a mini van, so a few more people can join (or more if there’s more cars). Email him if you want to go:

Rayko and Leslie are leading a
beginner climbing trip (weather dependent) to the ‘Dacks this weekend (Fri 9/7 night – Sunday 9/9 night). Email Rayko (

Brad is leading a
beginner climbing trip to the Gunks from Friday, 9/14 through Sunday, 9/16. Need more drivers (if you drive, you definitely get a spot!). Email him (
bpl24@cornell.edu) to join. Saturday night there will be a field trip to SUNY New Paltz to watch a Gunks benefit slideshow (~$7).
Rima is leading a
beginner friendly backpacking trip this weekend (9/8 – 9/9) to the Abbott Loop. 5-7 Mile hike in, and same on the way out. Need more cars! Email Rima if you want to join (

Jim is leading a
paddling session on Beebe Lake this Thursday (9/6) from 5:45 to 7:30pm. This will be a small group of people working on skills needed to go on beginner whitewater trips. Email him if you want to go (

Tom will lead a
hike tomorrow (9/5) to Cascadilla Gorge. Email him (
tgd8@cornell.edu) or just show up at Japes at 5pm. Probably be back by 7pm.
Sean is going
mountain biking at Hammond Hill, leaving around 10:30am on Saturday 9/8. Email him (

Ari and Ben are leading a
beginner/intermediate caving trip to Mystery Cave on Sat, Sept 8th. This will either be a long day trip, or an overnight, depending on interest. They need more people with cars to sign up! Email Ari (
ate2@cornell.edu) if you’d like to go. If you want to do some vertical caving, make sure you go to Ben & Peggy’s house for the training on Thursday (see below).

Fixing up the Cabin at Hammond Hill! Sept. 23rd (camping there from the 22nd if there’s interest). BBQ, local hiking and mountain biking, and chinking the walls! Email Ari (

Post Meeting Presentation Summary
Peggy and Ben showed a slideshow (“Black Hills Bonanza”) about their 30 hour road-trip to South Dakota. They
climbed and caved a number of different things (Harney Peak, Sylvan Lake, Cathedral Spires, International Chimney, Jewel Cave, Devil’s Tower, to name a few…) Lots of really cool scenery pictures, backed up by Ben’s geology facts!
