Minutes for July 26, 2005

Announcements

  • Please give the outing club your spare firewood
  • Sign up for educational programs, contact lackerman@alternatives.org
  • Contact Brendan (bsk25@cornell.edu) about leading an orientation trip on August 23 or 24
  • Emilie is having a going-away party on Thursday at Don's house, 7:30PM. Bring your own food.
  • Theodor serving out Romanian food at Don's place tonight 8:30PM
  • Kara (klp37@cornell.edu) says there's interesting caving possibilities nearby in Pennsylvania
  • Beth says a light was left on at Japes this weekend and today. Please make sure to properly clean up Japes, turn off lights, turn off hoses, and lock up before you leave.

Trips That Were

  • Jason hiked with his brother and father in Shenandoah National Park
  • Sarah hiked Gray's and Torrey's in Colorado
  • Daniel kayaked the Pineville section of the Salmon River
  • Jim paddled in the Dacks at Raquette River and in the Ausable Chasm during a release study. Ausable chasm is 10ft wide with walls rising 100+ft on each side.
  • Beth, Brendan, Alan, Theodor, Luke, Corinna, Zhao, Rachel, and David went for a moonlight paddle at the Cayuga inlet. Lesson from run-in with the law: The cops make mistakes sometimes. If you are in a non-motorized boat such as a canoe or kayak you do not need to have a light that is visible from all directions. Headlamp is sufficient for night boating.
  • John was in Cortina, Dolomite region, Italy at a conference to demonstrate cool alternative climbing techniques and gear. He demonstrated how to zoom up the rope with a "rope walker" technique honed with Jason and Simeon several weeks ago.
  • Brendan also unicycled with kayak to Cayuga Lake and back. And he tried windsurfing and found it to be awesome.

Trips That Shall Be

  • Critical mass ride starting at 5pm this weekend from the west end of the Commons. Unicyclers encouraged to join.
  • Ride for Life coming up. Unicyclers participating in a shorter route to benefit the same cause. Contact Brendan (bsk25@cornell.edu) for more info.
  • John (jjk54@cornell.edu) will be leading a local canoe trip this weekend.
  • Go sea kayaking on Thursday nights at East Shore Sailing. Contact Ben (brb4@cornell.edu) for more info.
  • Gorge cleanup with Lindsay (law35@cornell.edu) on July 28 and/or August 4.
  • Simeon (simeon@cs.cornell.edu) will lead a canoe trip in the Dacks on August 13-14.
  • Contact Simeon (sg324@cornell.edu) about his hiking plans in Europe.
  • Kara (klp37@cornell.edu) wants people to do something outdoorsy with her between New York and Maine on Saturday, July 30 or Saturday, August 6 as she comes to or from Maine.
