Hola, outdoorsy folk... the report of last night's weekly gathering of
outdoor enthusiasm:

Announceables:

Welcome to new folks: Luke, Star, Aimee, Rebecca, Jessica

Gear night: Thursday 5:30-6:30 with Brendan (bsk25)

It's the summer solstice!! To paraphrase Tim Ploss, "Yay,
sun!" [Note: now the days are getting shorter-- snow just around the
corner...]

Critical Mass: last Friday of each month (that's this Fri)-- meet at 4:30
at the W end of the Commons with the non-motorized conveyance of your
choice. Take back the streets! Ride lasts about an hour.

Work session available, this week or next, depending on your
availability: cataloging the COC map collection with librarian Emilie
(emilie@physics.cornell.edu).

Trips dat was:

Jim led a paddling session on Beebe Lake Friday where a number of beginners
learned some kayaking basics-- strokes, braces, and what all good stuff.

Jim, Leslie, and Ari paddled class 2ish whitewater on Owasco Outlet
Saturday. Ari's first river in a kayak!

Several folks (whose names I didn't get-- sorry!) went trail running-- more
such adventures to come...

Jason and Kara took former clubber and bat fanatic Jerry caving in
Schoharie, Knox, and the "wild" part of Secret Cavern. Jerry saw many bats
and was very excited-- hurrah for bats!

Leslie, Ari, Greg, et al., went canoeing on the Delaware. A delightful
outing on a terrific, scenic river-- great place for an easy going day of
boating. Entertainment included a propensity for one boat to capsize
and/or hit rocks, but no one's spirits were dampened by it all!

Emilie and seven beginners went rock climbing at Little Falls, had a lot of
fun, and learned a lot.

Brendan and a huge group-- 10 or so-- went unicycling! This may become a
regular Monday evening event-- stay tuned for more info. [Time to appoint
a unicycle chair?]

Jim and others paddled the Independence-- Jim learned the importance of 1)
carrying a knife on one's PFD and 2) NOT having anything flapping or
hanging off oneself, when a pull-cord of his drytop caught him up on a tree
just as he was about to go over a big slide. Ooops! But our intrepid
whitewater chair freed himself, and all was well.

Lots of people paddled on Beebe before the meeting.

Trips dat gonna be:

PADDLING

Salmon River will have releases this weekend and July 9/10. Beth (bak34)
will lead a trip the July 9/10 weekend. Water level will be appropriate
for beginners who have never been on a river but have been to a few Beebe
Lake sessions.

Brendan (bsk25) and others will be going to the Deerfield River Fest this
weekend. Demos, clinics, rivers to fun, and lots of fun. Beginner
appropriate, sort of. You need some basics.

Jim (jgj5) will lead another Beebe Lake beginner session later in the week...

HIKING / BACKPACKING

Aimee (alc47) and others would like to coordinate a backpacking trip this
weekend-- Sat/Sun, relatively local, presumably beginner appropriate. If
you're interested, would like to help plan, and/or have destination
suggestions, contact her.
