June 13, 2006 Meeting Minutes

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Gear night, Thursday 5:30 - 6:30 with Leslie
  • Welcome to a bunch of new folks (whose names are on my left-behind notes-- sorry!)
  • The photo board has been purged of ancient pics and needs new images of COCers doing cool things! Please submit to Rima (ks382)
  • Post-meeting presentation next week: Sarah Mennassian with awesome pictures from her semester in Hawaii.
  • And speaking of presentations: Matt wants you! Have cool outdoor slides to show or an outdoor skill to share or something you'd like to hear about? Matt (matt@clarityconnect.com) coordinates post-meeting programs.
  • Pre-meeting paddling continues next week and all through summer... meet 5:30 Tuesdays at Japes.

TRIPS THAT HAPPENED

  • Kara, Dante, et al. went caving at Clarksville... the trip involved a creative "fishing" expedition to retrieve a cave pack that was dropped in a crevice too deep for an arm and too narrow for a body...
  • Kira went trail running in Old Forge
  • Don, Matt, Kara, and others? went morel (it's a shroom) hunting and discovered enough of them to concoct some very tasty omelettes!
  • Leslie, Adrian, Ann, and Scott went climbing in the Gunks on a perfect day and finally discovered the name of "The Russian Guy"!

TRIPS THAT WILL HAPPEN

ROCKS

  • Beginner/intermediate rock climbing in the Adirondacks with Leslie and Adrian. Leave Friday evening, return Sunday night. Trip is almost full, reply to Leslie (leslie@alternatives.org)

TRAILS

  • Backpacking with Rob (wrb9) this weekend, Fri-Sun (or Thu-Sun if people have Fri free). Strenuous route planned; this should be considered an advanced trip.

BIKES

BOATS

  • Adirondack canoeing with Ari (ate2) and Greg (glh25) next weekend (June 23-25) to Cranberry Lake, an idyllic spot! Beginner-appropriate (but "you must have used a paddle before," so pre-meeting paddling next Tuesday is required for anyone who hasn't previously been canoeing).
  • Brendan (bsk25) is running a trip to the Deerfield River (dates? sorry!), with intermediate and advanced options.
  • Greg (glh25) would like to round up some folks to be support boaters (in canoes) for the "Women Swimmin" event, a fundraiser swim (across Cayuga Lake) for Hospicare. August 12, early in the morning, but you get free breakfast after the swim. And good karma!
