Personal Gear

(shamelessly copied, with a couple of tweaks, from Ari's list last year)

(asterisk indicates an item you SHOULD be able to obtain from the club) Please alert me about what you don't have and we'll improvise as best we can. It can get VERY COLD this time of year and it is important that you bring enough warm clothes to handle such a contingency. Please note that insulating clothing should be a non-absorbing fiber such as wool, polypropylene, or polyester. DO NOT WEAR COTTON! JEANS ARE COTTON!

  • *flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
  • *backup light
  • broad-mouth waterbottle
  • thermos/insulated bottle (if you have)
  • *0 deg F or better-rated sleeping bag
  • *winter-thickness sleeping pad or 2 summer-thickness pads
  • mid/heavy-weight long underwear for sleeping/bad conditions (top/bottom)
  • fleece or other warm pants
  • water-proof (preferably breathable) pant shells
  • water-proof parka, breathable fabric recommended
  • at least 2, preferably 3 fleece or woll layers including one 300 weight OR 2 fleece layers and a good down sweater
  • warm wool or fleece balaclava and/or hat (balaclava strongly recommended)
  • for hands - at least two sets: one thin, one heavy-duty set of mittens or gloves (thin gloves inside big mittens are a warm/flexible option)
  • 3 changes wool or fleece socks, or 2 changes with vapor-barrier socks
  • *boots appropriate for ice climbing
  • *crampons appropriate for ice climbing (light hiking crampons are not suitable)
  • 2 days lunch, snack, gorp - bring a lot, bring stuff you won't mind frozen, that requires little or no effort to prepare
