Bob Marshall and the Spirit of Wilderness
7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 24, 165 McGraw Hall
Overview
Phil Brown, editor of the
Adirondack Explorer News Magazine, will offer a lecture and slide show on the legendary Adirondack hiker, conservationist, and co-founder of the Wilderness Society.
Brown will also sell and sign copies of his new book,
Bob Marshall in the Adirondacks : Writings of a Pioneering Peak-Bagger, Pond-Hopper and Wilderness Preservationist.
The slide show presents an overview of Marshall's life with a focus on the considerable time he spent in the Adirondacks. Born in New York City in 1901, Marshall spent his boyhood summers in the Adirondacks and fell in love with wilderness. He was the first to climb all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks . He later explored uncharted Alaska, founded the Wilderness Society and, as a federal bureaucrat, worked to save millions of acres of wild land. He reveled in long hikes, often walking more than 30 miles in a day.
Cornell Outing Club sponsors the event, funded in part by the Student Assembly Finance Commission.
