The Cornell Outing Club

The Cornell Outing Club is one of the oldest student organizations at Cornell. Collegiate Outing Clubs form a rich history; we offer students the chance to develop outdoors skills, leadership experience, and form lifetime bonds, all in an environment of mutual help and assistance. Membership is only $7 per semester for undergraduate students ($10 per semester for others), and there is no club charge for any trips: participants merely share costs of food, transportation, and any incidental fees. The club has a large collection of gear, and this is all available to members at no charge on official club trips.

Meetings occur every Tuesday evening 7:30 pm at Japes Lodge on Beebe Lake. You can sign up to be a member at any of the weekly meetings.

Let us help you make an adventure happen.

Facebook

Check us out at http://www.facebook.com/CornellOutingClub and do all the usual facebooky stuff.

Club Photo Gallery

Post you pictures of club trips and related outdoor activities on our gallery! The link is http://www.cornelloutingclub.org/photos3/main.php and is also available on the left navigation bar. To post pictures you must register with the gallery (See instructions here). Once you are registered, you can also comment on other people's albums and photos.

Trip Reports

Of course, come to the meeting on Tuesday evening and give a trip report -- tell us what happened. It is also really great to send a written trip report to our email list. These emails will be added to our website (see examples of recent trip reports, to the right ).

Emailing photos to the whole list is not a good idea. However, we encourage you to upload your photos to a publicly available site such as our club photo gallery (see above), Facebook (globally visible album) or Flickr. Then, include a link in your email. We'll put (some of) the pictures into the report.

Would you like to show some slides as part of your trip report, or as a more formal slide show? Contact our Education Chairman to arrange for a projector.

Programs and selected activities

For the very latest information subscribe to the email mailing list.

Educational programs are presented at the conclusion of our weekly meetings. See the calendar at right.

How We Work

The Outing Club works on a very simple basis: members participate in and lead trips. Any member can organize a trip, subject to criteria defined by club chairs in the various activities. Any member can participate in a club trip, up to the limit defined by the organizer of the trip and the criteria defined by the trip leader.

Trips are organized at all levels of expertise from beginner to expert. One becomes proficient through practice with one's peers. Our goal is to help every club member learn from each other.

We sponsor trips involving backpacking, rock and ice climbing, telemark, XC, and downhill skiing, summer and winter mountaineering, flat and white-water kayaking and canoeing, field wildlife and plant identification, caving, mountain and road cycling, and any other activity involving exploration and appreciation of the natural world we live in.
